LAURA KELLY

I use an experimental approach to drawing to create works ranging from small wall-based pieces to large site-specific constructed drawings. My drawings are always irregular in shape, suggesting a world seen through unframed fragments. Line plays a dominant role and the work often moves between 2d and 3d. Materials include paper, thread, wire, graphite, pencil, watercolour, wood, foamboard and tape and I deliberately seek an ephemeral feel.

I work best on a large scale where a drifting point of view can come into play. My recent work is about imaginary snow-covered vistas influenced by winter residencies in Canada and the USA.

Ultimately I’m concerned with how the interplay between drawing and markmaking, surface, materiality, and suggested illusion can combine to create a sensation of transience and perceptual ambiguity. The aim is to produce a deliberate air of temporary occupation and fragile attachment while simultaneously presenting drawing as spectacle.
