I draw from observation. I use drawing for its immediacy and directness. A drawing can take a few minutes to sketch, or it is something that is gotten back to and changed time and again over years. A quick sketch or study is not quick in the sense that it’s leaning against a wall of trial. I’m entirely on the expressive side and am more concerned with subjectivity and less with the novel, the decorative or the cerebral. The tension between freedom and suppression is the general subject; the subject is personal and social. I use networks of hatched lines in pen on paper.
